A hidden gem is Cobourg's west beach and is one of my favourite places in Northumberland County. Located on the shore of Lake Ontario, the west beach board walk connects from Hibernia St. to Ontario St. You can take a brisk stroll from the inn in about 30 minutes or drive there. If you drive, parking is limited at Ontario street and you should park on Hibernia street or at the west end of the Cobourg Yacht club parking lot.
In winter, the boardwalk is not snow cleared, but is open throughout the year. In early spring, the grasses are starting to shoot up and in May and June we will see purple loosestrife, alfalfa, barren strawberry and dozens of wild Ontario flowers. The boardwalk is accessible to both pedestrians and cyclists and you will also see many respectful dog walkers. The Cobourg Ecology Garden a volunteer run, public learning space, is located at the east side, near Hibernia street and is worth a stop.
West Beach is one of my preferred photo locations, I visit in all seasons and I am fortunate to include the boardwalk on my morning walks!. I recommend visiting the boardwalk at any time, but I especially enjoy the evening walks and the softy, warm light at sunset.
