At what skill level should I be at to take the course?
The workshop is all about creativity and learning to appreciate elements of design, colour and texture. The workshop is suitable for creative people of every skill level. The course is not too technically involved. If you have a basic understanding of your camera’s settings such as shutter speed and aperture, you will be fine.

What should I bring to the workshop?
You will need a few basic pieces of equipment to get the most out of the workshop. For camera gear, I suggest at a minimum, a camera body and a standard zoom lens. Additionally, you may wish to bring a telephoto lens and a tripod as well as any other camera gear you may have. With the in-class component, a laptop computer with software for image editing would be helpful. For clothing, bring layers, and rain gear. We go out in the early morning just before sunrise. Light gloves and a hat may be useful if you are prone to getting chilly.

What meals are included in the workshop?
The workshop includes meals during your time here. They are: Sunday dinner; Monday breakfast; lunch; dinner; Tuesday breakfast; and lunch. Coffee and tea are included, but other beverages are additional.

Concerning the meals, I have a restricted diet, can my allergies or special dietary needs be met?
At The Woodlawn Inn, our hands on Red Seal Chefs can cater to your specific dietary requirements. If possible, please consult with Stephen prior to your arrival.

Can you give an outline or itinerary of the workshop?
Here is a basic summary of the workshop. Please note that weather or group requirements may require an alternation of the plan.

  • 1:00 to 6:00 arrival at the inn and check in if required.
  • 5:30 PM Meet Richard and other participants at bar/lounge
  • 6:30 PM Introduction, tutorial and discussion by Richard
  • 7:00 PM Dinner and discussion, Woodlawn dining room
  • 8:30 PM Discusion and Visuals by Richard
  • 10:00 PM Conclude for the day
  • Day 2
  • 6:15 AM Photo shoot, Cobourg waterfront
  • 9:15 AM Breakfast at the Woodlawn
  • 10:00 AM In class tutorial 
  • 12:30 PM Lunch at the Woodlawn
  • 1:30 PM Photo shoot field trip, tba
  • 4:30 PM Return to inn, personal time or image editing or discussion with Richard

I live close by, or can stay with a friend, is it mandatory to stay at The Woodlawn Inn?
No. The Woodlawn Inn offers a preferred room rate as a courtesy and it is not mandatory to stay there. Please keep in mind that the group departs for the morning photo-shoot at 5:15 AM, in the spring or 6:15 AM in the fall. If you are staying in the area, please allow enough travel time to be on location find the group and set up.

Can I share a guest room with a friend?
Yes you may share a room. We have allocated our only room with two beds (The Deluxe Double, room 208) for the workshop. We also have a number of Deluxe & Superior rooms that have a King-size bed.

I will not have a car with me and I will be arriving to Cobourg by VIA rail, is it close by?
Yes it is. You can easily walk to The Woodlawn Inn from the Cobourg VIA rail station. The walk should take 4-5 minutes, about 700 meters or, there are taxi's available.

I will not have a car with me will I be able to access the field trips?
While here during the workshop, Richard, and Stephen and other participants usually offer their vehicles to share with participants. The travel time from The Woodlawn Inn to our photo locations is less than 5 minutes.

I would like to arrive early or, extend my stay at The Woodlawn to do additional photo work, can my preferred room rate be extended?
Yes, we will be happy to extend the discounted rate for the additional days that you require.

I am arriving from outside of Canada and do not know the area. Is there someone that can offer advice on my travel options?
Yes, Stephen can assist you and offer travel options for arriving and departing to/from Cobourg.

I will be travelling with my partner and my partner will not be enrolled in the course. Is this possible?
Yes, it is. We can arrange to have your partner join you and the group for some or all of the meals if you would like. Also, for your partner, we can suggest activities in our area.

I am unfamiliar with Richard Martin, can you tell me a little more about him?
Richard Martin an architecture grad, has been a professional photographer since the 1980's. Professionally, Richard has worked with Tamron and Adorama Photo, and has been a frequent contributor to Photo Life magazine. Travelling mostly outside of Canada, Richard has offered his creative photography workshops in Italy, India, Ireland, Portugal, Morocco, Cuba, Mexico and The United States. Richard has a busy international touring schedule, and workshops at The Woodlawn Inn in Cobourg are a rare opportunity to see him in Canada. We are in our seventh year of Vision & Discovery workshops at The Woodlawn Inn, and over the years, many photographers have travelled from Mexico, South Africa and the United States to attend. Alternatively, you may call The Woodlawn Inns reception desk, at 1-800-573-5003, and book a guest room under the "Richard Martin Photography" room allocation.

I can not attend and need to cancel
The deposit can be returned with advance notice of a cancellation. Please notify us at least 90 days prior to the start of the workshop.
